Sadie and I contacted my old friend from Xaverian who dropped out of school. He dropped out to pursue his dreams of becoming a rapper so that he would be able to solely focus on his dream. Some issues we had with this included finding a date as well as some technical issues. Because of sports, Sadie and I had a difficult time organizing a time to interview and film with Matt. The next issue that we came across was our lavaliere microphone. My audio recorder would not turn on and it was seemingly broken. We had to use the camera audio to record the interview, which I then had to fix in post production.
We recently went to the Student Television Network Conference in Atlanta, Georgia. My part of the competition was to create two feature stories; one story for our Crazy 8's competition, as well as one as part of the spot feature story contest. Our first story had to fall under the technology and science category. We chose to do a story relating to video production, which leaded us to a video transfer service. Most went well in this project, as we had a good interview, unique and interesting subject, and an excess of b-roll. However, our issue with this story was our lack of nat-sound. Although we had many clips of him showing all the different types of equipment, we were unable to use most of it. Our spot feature story was much harder than this one. Our topic was "Life in the Fast Lane." For this topic, we originally went to look for a homeless man who had to live on the streets. However, we were unable to find one and had to look for a new topic. We then looked for something having to do with a catering service. After numerous denials for interviews, we were forced to go in a new direction. At this point, we were going to be late for out editing time, so we needed to find a story and try to make something out of it. We interviewed a woman at the front desk of the Marriott and finished filming within twenty minutes. We then spent the rest of our time trying to make a story out of what we had, which was very difficult. Although it was not a good story in the end, I learned a lot about having to deal with what you are given.
During February, I have been working on my own with Kim Miller to help edit videos for her organization. She works for ASAP, which is the Association of Strategic Alliance Professionals, where she is the marketing director. She had someone film interviews with several members of the organization, and I had to edit those interviews down. This involved editing out the interviewer asking questions, as well as editing out background noise. I also had to create graphics and lower thirds. I did this for about eight video clips and then sent them back to her for promotion of the ASAP organization.
During term two, I produced football highlights for the Norwood High School football team. For these videos, I went to the games and filmed every individual play since I was already filming the games for the team to review. I wanted to make highlights of these clips, so I brought my laptop and at the end of the game I would download the clips to my computer. I would then edit these together with the best plays and put in voiceover to create a highlight under a minute for every Friday for the end of the football season. I also helped edit the story "Paper Cranes", that was filmed by Sadie Krall and Taylor Reed.
